Money saving ideas for your 2009 wedding

In a May 7 article, Sue Stock of the (Raleigh) News & Observer reports that more Brides are opting for cheaper weddings.

She writes,

“For many, spending $22,000 and up is unrealistic amid a recession. Some brides are taking the do-it-yourself route, making their own invitations, centerpieces and favors.

They’re cutting out open bars and limousines. And they’re playing hardball with vendors, asking for additional discounts before signing contracts.”

So what does this mean to today’s bride, trying to plan the perfect wedding in a recession? Stock’s article suggest these tips:

  • Plan your wedding in early spring or after the prime, summer wedding season. Reception venues sometimes give discounted rates for off-season weddings.
  • Save money on centerpieces and wedding reception favors by buying supplies on clearance and making them yourself.
  • Many wedding business owners are offering discounts and special promotional packages. Shop around for wedding vendors who are offering discounts and low-priced packages on dresses or services.
  • Be flexible on your dates and times. Consider getting married on a Friday and having the rehearsal dinner on Thursday night to take advantage of lower rates at venues and restaurants.
  • Cut down your wedding guest list and have more intimate weddings so you get more bang for your buck on wedding must-haves such as food.
